KAYONZA - Officials in Kayonza district have expressed concern over the increasing population in Murundi sector.

John Gatete, the in charge of health in the district noted that despite government efforts to sensitise residents on the importance of family planning, many residents in the area continue to produce many children.

"We have constantly told you to space children, and produce only those you can afford to bring up,” Gatete said at a sensitisation meeting last weekend. "It is unfortunate that you turned a deaf ear and continued to produce (children) recklessly.”

According to officials, socio cultural barriers are to blame for low contraceptive use.

Nathan Niyonzima, the Sector Executive Secretary, said that the sector’s plans to ensure food security in families are being hampered by the ever increasing population. 

"Poor family planning has reached unacceptable levels, families have children they cannot afford to raise, yet they continue to produce more,” he said.

"I appeal to all parents, to think about using contraceptives to help them in family planning, forthwith.”
