The Minister of Education (MINEDUC) has revealed that government will put more emphasis in encouraging girls to pursue science and technology subjects in secondary and higher education.

Speaking during a meeting organized by Delphe project in partnership with Kigali Institute of Education (KIE) yesterday, the Minister of Education, Dr. Charles Murigande, said that girls have the chances of excelling in sciences as boys.  

"Girls are as capable as boys depending on their desire to pursue science and technology education,” said Murigande, adding that the government recognizes the need for science and technology to realize its development goals. 

He appreciated Delphe project for the support in promoting girl education in Rwanda.

Speaking at the event, the Rector of KIE, Professor George K. Njoroge, said there is huge gap between girls and boys doing science and mathematics in Rwanda due to traditional barriers.

Professor Pamela Abott, the country’s project coordinator, said in an interview that the project is also aimed at making policy and practice recommendations to governments, employers, education institutions and technology programmes to enable girls realise their potential in science and technology courses.  

DELPHE begun operations in Rwanda in 2007 and is funded by the British Council.

The project has entered into partnerships with KIE, KIST, the National University of Rwanda and the University of Aberdeen.
