MUHANGA - An official of the National Women’s Council (CNF) has praised rural women in Muhanga district for their innovativeness which has led them out of poverty.

Aline Mukabalisa Irambona, made the remarks during a three-day tour of women’s activities ahead of the International Women’s Day slated for March 8.

"Most of the visited women have exhibited the ability to be self-reliant and make a significant contribution to their families, without necessarily relying on their spouses,” she said.

"These activities should continue so as to have the role of women in development felt.”

Various successful women in agriculture and livestock activities in each sector will be rewarded for their outstanding developmental activities during the women’s day celebrations.

Most women, who talked to The New Times, attribute their success to good leadership and access to bank loans.

However, they pointed out lack of market and equipment to transform products into finished goods as some of their challenges.

"Women are able and we are proud of this success,” said Francine Murebwayire, who owns cows and a house constructed from agriculture activities.

"Our initiatives have been backed by government support and local leaders have been helpful in providing advice, advocacy and offering cheap seedlings and manure.”
