KARONGI- A Genocide fugitive who has been on the run for the past five years was yesterday arrested in a joint operation mounted by residents and the National Police. 

Jean Baptiste Rugwizangoga, alias Sekanuma, was sentenced in absentia to a 30-year jail term by a Gacaca court in Bwishyura Sector, Karongi District two months ago for his role in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Rugwizangoga who was accused of mobilizing a search for Tutsis before they were eventually massacred at Gatwaro stadium was arrested after a tip off.

According to Police, Rugwizangoga had gone into hiding in Nyamata, Bugesera District prior to the verdict.

"We were told by his neighbours that he had come back after a long time in hiding and he was immediately arrested,” police told The New Times shortly after apprehending Rugwizangoga.
