KIGALI - Months after Kigali City Advisory Council grilled Mayor, Dr. Aisa Kirabo Kacyira over her negligence in addressing the concerns of Jabana residents, the Chinese construction firm at the centre of the conflict has agreed to compensate the residents this week.

The firm that owns a stone quarry in the area is alleged to have used powerful explosives in breaking up the rocks causing damages to some of the houses nearby.

According to KCC Vice Mayor in charge of Finance and Economic development, Alphonse Nizeyimana, the money is now available.

"We have received the money from the Chinese firm and we have transferred it to the district (Gasabo) bank account that will then pay the residents,” Nizeyimana said.

Over 100 affected residents are to benefit from the Rwf 16.9m pool after an evaluation carried out by the city committee in December.

Nizeyimana said the firm had been given firm warning to use safe methods that are not hazardous to the residents.

"We also agreed that they reduce on the power of the explosives they use,” Nizeyimana said.
