Rwamagana- Community health workers from the districts of Ngoma and Kirehe were trained by the Ministry of Health on how to preserve and use medicine properly.

Emery Hezagira, the officer in charge of Community Health Desk in the Ministry of Health, said that Community health workers (CHWs) were trained to deliver basic healthcare.

"In areas where doctors, especially female doctors, are scarce, their ability to provide prenatal care and family planning advice prevents serious health complications for mothers and infants,” Hezagira said.

"By delivering services to patients in their homes, community health workers improve adherence to treatment and reduce the burden of time and money on both patients and health care systems,” he said.

Janvier Nizeyimana, a community health worker based in Rukira sector, Ngoma district, said that the work they are doing has helped people in the remotest part of the district get health services.

He however, requested the ministry to provide sufficient facilitation to carry out their duties better.

Geraldine Niyoduhorana who works at Nyarugunga Health Centre in Kigali, said CHWs have been successful in engaging and retaining people in the healthcare system, especially the "difficult to reach,” or low literacy populations.

The five-day workshop held in Rwamagana ended yesterday.
