RWANDA’S Amavubi Stars will hold a one-week residential camp before hosting Eritrea on March 12-14 in the preliminary round of the 2011 African Nation Championship (CHAN) qualifiers.
Ferwafa Chief Executive Officer Jules Kalisa says that the team will start preparations on March 5.
"They will camp for seven days before playing Eritrea in Kigali. We are concentrating our resources on a young team for this tournament,” Kalisa said.
Like other nations, Rwanda is chasing for a ticket to next year’s African Nation Championship after missing out on last year’s edition following a humiliating 0-4 loss to Sudan at the preliminary stage.
After playing the first leg in Kigali on the weekend of March 12-14, the team heads to Asmara for the return leg on the weekend of March 26-28.
The winner will then face either Tanzania or the winner between Somalia and Djibouti. The tournament, to be hosted in Sudan will run from January 21 to February 10.
With the central zone allotted two qualifying spots; Rwanda will have to wrestle Burundi, Uganda, Ethiopia, Kenya, Djibouti, Somalia, Tanzania and Eritrea for one of the slots. Caf has doubled the number of participating teams to 16. Qualifiers will be played from six zones.
