Emmanuel Murangwa, the district vice Mayor in charge of Economic Affairs, revealed that the number of people with access to clean water in the district had risen from 59 percent to 82 percent within a period of three years.
"We have started to elaborate plans for other regions that do not have access to clean water.Our target is to have 90 percent of the population having access to clean water before the end of this year,” said Murangwa.
He was speaking during the inauguration of a 33km water channel from Rubego to Bwenda villages in Kibumbwe sector on Wednesday.
The Rwf250million channel, which was constructed under the support of the Water and Sanitation Fund (FEA), will enable an estimated 10,000 people in the sector to access potable water. Murangwa attributed the impressive progress to good cooperation between the district and its stakeholders.
Local residents in Kibumbwe sector welcomed the new water channel, saying they will no longer have to travel long distances to look for clean water.
