KARONGI - Authorities in Karongi district have included 88 local leaders who are considered poor among the beneficiaries of the cattle redistribution exercise.
Over 200 cows that had been given out irregularly in the district were recalled last month.
During the redistribution exercise yesterday in Bwishyura Sector, most of the new beneficiaries could not hide their excitement upon getting back the cows that had earlier been taken away.
"It is very pleasing to see that our government considers all poor people without discrimination. It does not mean that if you are a village chief, then you must be rich,” one of the beneficiaries said.
While presiding over the opening of the re-distribution exercise, Yves Bernard Ningabire, Karongi district Executive Secretary, reaffirmed government’s commitment to elevating the vulnerable out of poverty.
"The government will always help the poor, I hope no one will convince you to sell or exchange the exotic breeds of cows you have been given,” he said.
