RWANDA’s top players Jean Claude Gasigwa and Dieudonne Habiyambere are within touching distance of the US$850 winner’s cash prize after storming the semi-finals of the ITF/CAT East African Money Circuit Kigali leg which is being held at Umubano Laico hotel.
Gasigwa, who missed the first leg in Burundi because of a bruised leg was cruising 6-4, 3-1 when his country-mate Allan Hakizimana retired hurt. Enroute the quarter-finals, the country’s top seed had dismissed Tanzania’s Salum Riziki 6-0 6-3 (second round) and Damascene Munyaneza 6-2 6-3 (third round).
Habiyambere also came through in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 against Ernest Kazungu.
He ejected Cekina Niyonshuti 6-2 6-0 (second round) and Melee Bizimana 6-3, 6-3 (third round) on his way to the last eight.
Gasigwa will now play the winner between Kenya’s Francis Rogoi and Sebastian Mutupile of Tanzania while Habiyambere awaits the winner between Uganda’s Robert Buyinza and Rawal Yash of Kenya.
In the ladies fray, home girls Gisele Umumararungu and Firadaus Kiza failed to reach the final after semi-final defeats against Caroline Odour (Kenya) and Burundi’s Athumani respectively.
