MUSANZE - Local authorities in Musanze district have been sensitised about the existing laws on conservation and promotion of the environment in Rwanda.

Officials from the Rwanda Environment Management Authority-REMA, conducted the sensitisation drive in which participants discussed fundamental principles related to environmental protection.

‘Every person has the duty to protect, conserve and promote the environment. This is a collective responsibility,’ Charles Sindayigaya, an official from REMA said at the end of a sensitisation session in Musanze.

Meanwhile, participants reported that sewage from Ruhengeri prison and Pyrethrum processing company-Sopyrwa pose  environmental hazards as they contaminate water which ultimately drains into Kigombe water channel.

‘The water channel is highly contaminated, with sewage and the water is being consumed by those living around this source,” one participant said.
