APR has been forced to delay its departure to Angola for this year’s Fiba-Africa Club championships by an extra day as they continue soliciting for more funds.
The local basketball giants who are qualified for the championship after winning the zone five title early in the year, were initially expected to jet out this morning but according to their coach Cliff Owuor, had to reschedule their departure after failing to raise the amount of money they require.
Even after landing a good offer from the government through the sports ministry, it is said that the club is still seven million Rwandese francs short of their drafted budget.
"The ministry has really helped us out. On top of footing the team’s air tickets, it has also supplemented this offer with some cash.
"But we are still Frw 7million short of our budget and we call upon all well-wishers to help us in anyway they can,” Owuor ‘cried’ out.
Twelve clubs have lined up for the continental event that gets underway this Thursday in the Angolan capital Luanda.
APR, who are one of the event’s underdogs are seeded in group A alongside last year’s runners-up Primero De Agosto (Angola), Interclube (Angola), ASPAC (Benin), M.B.C (Guinea), ASB Kauka (DR. Congo) and APR.
The other group (B) has defending champions Petro Atletico (Angola), Nigeria’s Niger Potters, Ivory Coast’s Abidjan, Stade Malien (Mali), BC Onatra (DR. Congo) and Ferroviario Da Beira (Mozambique).
The Fiba-Africa Club Championship is considered to be the biggest club competition on the Fiba calendar and the winner qualifies for next year’s Fiba-world club championships.
