KIREHE — Women in rural parts of Kirehe district convened a meeting in Nyamugari sector and vowed to end traditional stereotypes and prejudice against them. 

Bernadette Kamungu, the Vice Mayor in charge of Social Affairs, noted that the level of women emancipation in most areas of the district was promising.

She said that all traditions that worked against women have been put aside. 

"Women are involved in constructing houses, they carry children on bicycles to dispensaries for treatment,” Kamungu said. ”These are some of the things that were only meant for men.” 

She added that the fact that women can now do the work that was exclusively meant for men is a big step towards achieving total emancipation. 

Gertrude Kanakuze, 35, a resident of Mwoga village in Mahama sector said that she does not have any limit when it comes to domestic work.

"I don’t care about what I do, because I have the same power as my husband. He may be a bit stronger but that doesn’t mean that I have to rely on him for everything,” she said. 

"When any of my children falls sick, I rush to a dispensary on our bicycle. I fasten him or her on my back and jump on a bicycle,” she said shyly.
