Two inmates die after weekend road accident

RUBAVU — Authorities at Gisenyi Prison say two of the 30 inmates who were injured when a truck transporting them from Gisenyi lost control and swerved off the road have died.

Micheal Murara, the Director of Gisenyi prison told The New Times that Cleophase Hakizimana, 64, and Tharsis Hakizimana, 45 died at Nemba Hospital in Gakenke district where they had been admitted.

The weekend accident took place in Gakenke district in the Northern Province.

"Their bodies were taken to Gisenyi Hospital, and their families have been contacted,” Murara said.

The victims were among the over 1000 inmates who were transferred from the Rubavu-based correctional centre to Karubanda in the Southern Province in an endeavour to reduce congestion.
