As part of the ongoing implementation of the Kigali Master Plan, city authorities plan to set up a mega sewerage recycling plant, which is expected to be built in the Nyabugogo, an area 10 kilometres from the City Centre.

KCC’s Director of Communications, Bruno Rangira, said that studies to construct the Nyabugogo sewerage treatment plant are complete and they are now going into the phase of mobilizing funds to finance the project.

"This is a city that has been in existence for more than 100 years and has not had a clear master plan until it was launched two years ago,” Rangira emphasized.

The objective of sewerage treatment plant is to produce disposable effluent water without causing harm to the communities and prevent pollution.

As a medium term solution, works have started to construct a central water treatment plant in the former lower Kiyovu which is now part of the Central Business District (CBD).

For short term solution, KCC had ordered that commercial buildings, hotels and restaurants, construct proper sewerage systems with a capacity to recycle and treat water internally.

The move comes after, city residents have continuously complained about poor sewerage system with some public places characterized by heavy stench.

According to Rangira, the treatment plant will be built to meet international standards with modern technology to treat and recycle waste water and household sewerage around Kigali City.
