Riviera High School has awarded a fully paid A-level scholarship to Neza Keren who came out best overall O-level student in the 2009 national exams. According to the chairman of the board of the school, Charles Karake, Neza and other students who performed well had made the three-year old school proud.
"These students have done us proud and that is why we have decided to begin offering scholarships to our best students in order to inculcate the spirit of hard work to our students,” said Karake.
He passed a vote of thanks to the students and teachers who worked tirelessly in order to get the good results.
"We managed to get all the students who sat for exams pass with no single failure, which is a big achievement. This wouldn’t have been possible without maximum hard work on the side of the teachers and students themselves,” he expressed.
Karake also said that the school has plans to make the science department one of the best, not only in Rwanda, but in the whole region and called upon the government to help the school in its goal of becoming a ‘science centre of excellence.’
Another student Alvin Kaijage also got a scholarship for being second best performing student at the school.
The State Minister in charge of Primary and Secondary Education, Dr. Mathias Harebamungu, pledged full government support.
He said that the government is always ready to do all it can to see that education in the country is developed and that it can be done through partnering with the private sector.
Harebamungu also thanked the proprietor of the school, Jane Kobusingye, for having decided to invest in the education sector among other many things.
"I thank the proprietor of this school for being among the people who responded to the president’s call to invest in the education sector,” said the Minister.
He urged the school to keep up the spirit of excellence and reminded them that excellence in academics goes hand-in-hand with discipline.
Riviera High School currently has a population of 444 students and over 100 come from other African countries like Cameroon, Benin, Tanzania, Kenya, Uganda and Burundi.
