The World Food Programme (WFP), will today Monday host a "national response analysis workshop on food security, a meeting that is expected to take place at Laico Hotel.

Aimed at improving the response to food security crises in the region, the workshop will look at how communities and partners can improve their access to food, and how to improve harvests.

It will be held in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Resources (MINAGRI) and will be officially opened by the Minister of Agriculture,Dr. Agnes Kalibata, and WFP Country Director, Abdoulaye Balde.

"This workshop is timely. It is imperative that WFP and our partners try to prevent food crises, before they happen.

WFP is not just giving out food assistance, but working with communities to ensure their food security for the future,” Balde notes in a related WFP communiqué.

It added that the workshop is one of the main recommendations of a food security survey undertaken last year.

This survey established that there was a need to explore practical and concrete ways on how the government and partners can improve their response to crises like drought, climate change, which threaten the community’s food supply.

Participants will analyze why certain groups of people are food insecure, and how to improve access to food, by giving communities better seeds and fertilizer.

Ways in which farmers can protect themselves, by developing other means of income than simply living off the land will also be put forward.

The WFP is the world’s largest humanitarian organization fighting hunger worldwide.
