RUBAVU - Over 600 former street children who were under going rehabilitation at the Kigali based rehabilitation centre "Kwa Kabuga” were last week transferred to Iwawa Island on Lake Kivu in Rutsiro district.

The children, transferred by the Ministry of Youth, were received by the Western Province governor,   Celestin Kabahizi.

"We have received only street children from Kigali, and the place here is enough to accommodate a big number. The Ministry of Youth is taking good care of them,” Kabahizi, said while receiving the children.

Speaking to The New Times, Kabahizi said the island is more spacious for the children to think and follow training sessions organised by the ministry, aimed at modelling them into responsible citizens.

"The island facility will help especially to prevent escape of some of the children, they will be better managed.”

Kabahizi said, adding that more children were expected.
