Over the past 10 years, the Rwandan National Police has evolved into a professional force whose character is being recognized for its impeccable standards.

Though the process of professionalization is a work in progress, there is no doubt that Rwanda is already reaping the benefits of running an exemplary disciplined Police force.

The fact that the United Nations Police Commissioner General, Ann-Marie Orler, currently visiting the country, has made it clear that her organization appreciates and needs more Rwandan Police for peace keeping roles, is testimony to the international recognition of RNP’s discipline.

The bad apples within the force are nipped in the bud as soon as they are detected. The latest batch to be dismissed, as of yesterday, numbers 35. If the Police force is to be respected both in Rwanda and abroad, it is important that it maintains this high level of commitment.

No doubt that the story of police forces elsewhere on the continent leaves a lot to be desired. Many are famous for all the wrong reasons----either rampant corruption or being accomplices to crimes.

Much as we take pride into this vote of confidence, we need to acknowledge that there’s always room for improvement.

RNP should maintain the focus and stick their core mission of delivering high quality services, ensuring accountability and transparency, safeguarding the rule of law and providing safe and a crime free environment for all.
