7p.m:  Wilderness (French)

"Wilderness”, Michael Bassett’s follow-up to his World War I horror movie "Death Watch” can best be described as "Lords of the Flies” meets "Friday the 13th”. The film concerns an intrepid band of delinquent teens who, after one of their own commits suicide due to bullying, are sentenced to become one with nature at a remote island.

9 p.m: Death Race (English)

Of all the Z-movies in the Roger Corman catalog, they had to remake "Death Race 2000.”

But if the original "Death Race,” with its murderous road rally drivers who take down pedestrians for "points,” seemed darkly prophetic when it came out back in 1975, the new one feels ripped from the pages of tomorrow’s TV Guide.

SUNDAY

7 p.m: Échec et Mat (French)

The Belgian drama Eleve Libre offers a disturbing take on the coming-of-age genre. Written and directed by Joachim Lafosse (Private property), the film centres on 16-year-old Jonas (Jonas Bloquet), a promising young tennis player who is failing out of school.

The troubled teen is offered help from a tennis professional, thirty something Pierre (Jonathan Zaccai), but the mentorship takes on an increasingly menacing nature as the older man begins insinuating himself into Jonas’s personal life.
