Over 300 former street children who had been housed by Kigali City Council at Gikondo Transit Centre in Nyarugenge district have been put in a vocational training school for street kids in Rutsiro district.

KCC with the help of the Ministry of Youth decided to do so in order to cut on the centre’s expenditure that had been estimated at Rwf 15m per month.

Speaking to The New Times yesterday, KCC’s vice Mayor in charge of social affairs, Jean D’arc Gakuba, said that due to the high number of street kids at the centre, the council has been seeking for help from the government.

"The Ministry of Youth has come to our help and it has taken some of these kids for vocational training”.
"We have so far selected 300 street children from the 800 for the first phase,”

The street kids transit centre was started in 2005 by KCC.
