KARONGI – A comprehensive survey on food security indicates that areas bordering the Nile river waters are most vulnerable to food insecurity.
The districts include Nyabihu, Ngororero, Nyaruguru, Nyamagabe, Karongi and part of Rutsiro and Musanze, according to the survey conducted last year.
However the survey also shows that the Eastern Province districts of Nyagatare, Gatsibo, Kayonza Kirehe, Ngoma and Rwamagana are the most secure.
According to the World Food Program (WFP) which commissioned the survey, the reasons for the glaring difference between the two regions are attributed to dry spells and irregular rains.
"Now that we know the reasons behind this trend, it is within our mandate to help reverse the situation,” Abdoulaye Balde, the representative and country director of WFP told The New Times shortly after presenting the findings yesterday.
The survey was conducted among 5,400 households countrywide.
