New Board members of the Media High Council (MHC) yesterday assumed office after a handover ceremony witnessed by the Minister of Cabinet Affairs, also current overseer of the information docket, Protais Musoni.

The New Times’ Managing Editor, Arthur Asiimwe, was elected the chairman of the new seven-member board.

At the hand-over, the chairman-elect, alongside his fellow board members, promised to devote energy on uplifting the standards of media in the county. 

They promised to mobilise training opportunities for journalists in order to improve on the standards of professionalism in the sector.

"I will improve the level of professionalism by finding training opportunities to raise standards in the profession,” he said. 

He called upon media owners to incorporate a business culture in running their media outlets as one way of improving the current state of media in the country. 

He also promised to fast track the Access to information law that is currently in the pipeline.

Minister Musoni called upon media houses to carry out broader and deeper analysis when reporting.

"There is inadequate reporting on issues. This requires more effort on broader and deeper analysis and coverage. News coverage is still small,” he said.

The Media High Council was formed in 2003 to facilitate efficient management and regulation of the media.
