Police arrests illegal money dealers

It was reported that Rwanda National Police (RNP) arrested 15 people suspected to have been involved in illegal money trading.

Fourteen men and one woman were arrested in different parts of the city after police coordinated with the Central Bank following a tip off by the victims.

Canadian court denies asylum to genocide suspect

Early in the week, a Canadian Court denied asylum for the sixth time to Henri Jean Claude Seyoboka due to existing evidence pinning him for participating in the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

Seyoboka, a former soldier in the Forces Armees Rwandaise (FAR), had his refugee status revoked by the Canadian Immigration authorities after he had deliberately failed to mention his army links. It was later found that he also participated in the massacres.

In a desperate attempt to restore his refugee status, the 43 year old resident of Quebec filed appeals six times trying to distance himself from the Genocide, but has been told by the Federal Court of Canada that he is excluded from refugee status as investigations continue.

Garage operators given ultimatum by REMA

Automobile garage operators in Nyabugogo wetland castigated the 30-day ultimatum given to them by the Rwanda Environment Management Agency (REMA) to vacate the area.

There are more than 20 workshops in the wetland.
The workshop operators who The New Times spoke to say the ultimatum came at a very short notice. Others say the area is very accessible to their clients.

Green hills donates to Haiti

Students from Green Hills Academy handed over a cheque worth Rwf1m to Haiti children following the catastrophic earthquake that claimed thousands of lives and left millions homeless.

According to Ran Wallace, the Head teacher of the school, the fundraising was a students’ initiative aimed at helping the needy Haitians.

Request to sentence Munyakazi

The prosecution at the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) has requested the court to sentence former businessman Yussuf Munyakazi to life imprisonment.

Munyakazi, a former wealthy farmer in the Western Province, is charged with counts of Genocide, or complicity in the alternative and extermination as a crime against humanity.

He is one of the suspects the Tanzania-based UN tribunal had referred to Rwanda for trial by the Chief Prosecutor, a move that was later blocked by the Trial Chamber.

Mpiranya hidden by Zimbabwe

Protais Mpiranya, one of the most wanted genocide suspects is being hidden by the Zimbabwean Government, new reports from the Southern African country indicate.
Mpiranya, the former Commander of the Presidential Guard during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi is being pursued by Belgian authorities and is also on the list of 13 most wanted persons by the Arusha-based International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda.

He also appears on the list of most wanted persons for genocide and war crimes, under the US Rewards for Justice Programme, with a $5m bounty.
