KAYONZA – A Senior Two student at Ndego Secondary School is lucky to still be alive after a stray buffalo from Akagera National Park attacked her as she was cutting cattle fodder on Wednesday

Adeline Uwimana, sustained injuries on the stomach and was rushed to Ndego Health Centre for treatment.

The incident is the latest in a string of attacks by stray animals on residents living near the park. A few days back a hippopotamus killed a man tending to his garden.

Talking to The New Times, Uwimana who was visibly terrified narrated her ordeal that she said started at 10.30 am in Humure village, Ndego sector, Kayonza district.  

"I saw a huge animal that looked like our bull. But when I critically examined I found out that it was a different animal. It immediately hit me with its horns sending me high in the air, before I fell in a ditch,” she said.

"It stood aside for some minutes watching me, where I lay motionless in the ditch, and then it jumped over and left. I woke up to see it disappearing in a distance, and then I went home leaping,” she added.

Emmanuel Tuyishime, a nurse working at Ndego Health Centre said that the centre was ill-equipped to deal with the girl’s injuries.

"We are going to arrange her transfer to Rwinkwavu Hospital where she can have enough examinations.

She could have injured her kidneys or intestines which are beyond our means,” he said.
