7p.m: Cleaner (French).
Famed for his fast-talking roles and a persona demanding respect, Samuel L. Jackson moves into the rare position as a framed victim for Cleaner.
Playing murder scene cleaner Tom Cutler, an ex-cop now dealing with the dirty mess left behind at homicides, his smart delivery is quickly knocked out of him when a routine job in a luxury house implicates him in a crime.
9 p.m: Hangover (English)
The Hangover is a very funny film, the cinematic equivalent of Jell-O shots. It takes the standard notion of a boys’ night out and turns it into part gross-out gag fest, part "what comes next” mystery.
Phillips brings certain darkness to the material, a genuine sense of danger that comes across clearly and often. It doesn’t take away from the humor, but it does make the eventual revelations about the night’s events all the more unexpected.
Sunday
9 p.m: Rogue (English).
Rogue is essentially a series of panic set-pieces, as the group tries to outwit the croc and return to safety. It’s a film that takes its time, building the tension for more functional results.
Mclean’s direction is confident and easily understood, and he manages to sneak in a nice aura of hopelessness as the fearful unit grows more desperate to escape the wrath of the croc.
