I want to respond to Emma Kabanda’s commentary about homosexuality which appeared in the Sunday Times on 31 January.

In the article, Kabanda argues incorrectly that homosexuality is a genetic issue and that homosexuals are the way they are because they are born that way.

As a matter of fact, even the scientists who support this school of thought have failed to come up with documented proof to back this up.

It is rather widely accepted that people are gay because of social influence especially childhood experiences.

From all the scientific research that has been conducted, no "gay gene” has been discovered.

No single organization that is internationally recognized will use the excuse of genetics as their basic argument for homosexuality.

That is why homosexuality activists use ‘adult consent’ as their strongest argument for the practice.

Kabanda also praises the parliament of Rwanda for scrapping the whole law against homosexuality. To me, this is a recipe for disaster.

Considering the society we live in, homosexuality is widely abhorred and not discouraging it will not take away the stigma to which gay are subjected in their respective communities which may culminate into them being exposed to mob justice.

Therefore, the parliament should have it in mind that their stand doesn’t in anyway protect this minority group. They should make a law legalizing or illegalizing the act so that the society can know how to react.
