Kigali City Council in conjunction with IBUKA, an umbrella organization of Genocide survivors’ association, plan to introduce a new system which will help in identifying the whereabouts of the remains of the victims of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi scattered around the city.

The move that is said to be yielding positive results in the Western Province includes hanging a cloth on places where those killed during Genocide are buried.

In a telephone interview with The New Times yesterday, Kigali City vice Mayor in charge Social Affairs, Jean d’ Arc Gakuba, said that many people know where these victims were buried during Genocide but they fear being prosecuted or summoned if they came forward to identify the sites.

"We are planning to sensitise people so that whoever knows where these genocide remains are buried, to put up signs for easy identification so that we can be able to accord them decent burial,” Gakuba said

"We believe that with this technique in place, we shall be able to get many more remains that are still buried under buildings and other places around the city,” she added
Gakuba also said that Rusororo and Kimisagara have so far been identified as having mass graves with houses built on top.

"But we are yet to demolish these houses which need some procedures,” she said.

Without revealing the real number of bodies which have so far been discovered around the city, Gakuba said that they were also planning to give the remains a decent burial before this month ends.
