Over 20 legislators from the Lower Chamber of Parliament on Saturday joined residents of Kabaya Sector, Ngororero district in the Western province in the monthly community work, Umuganda. The MPs and local residents planted over 3,000 trees and carried stones from surrounding hills to Groupe Scholaire Kajeshe, which is undergoing construction.
Over 20 legislators from the Lower Chamber of Parliament on Saturday joined residents of Kabaya Sector, Ngororero district in the Western province in the monthly community work, Umuganda.
The MPs and local residents planted over 3,000 trees and carried stones from surrounding hills to Groupe Scholaire Kajeshe, which is undergoing construction.
Speaking after the exercise, Hon. Fred Rwasa Kayiranga urged the residents of Kabaya to work together so as develop the area.
"The trees we have planted are vital in conserving the environment and we hope you will protect them,” he urged.
He thanked the residents for turning up in large numbers to participate in the activity that fosters unity and development.
The Minister of Forests and Mines, Christophe Bazivamo, who was accompanied by four Belgian Members of Parliament, also took part in the exercise.
He lauded the residents for their enthusiasm in participating in community work.
He advised them to plant more trees in the area to control soil erosion which is a major problem.
"We can only achieve what we want if we put our efforts together,” said Bazivamo.
He also urged the residents to fight Genocide ideology which tore the country apart several years ago.
