The 2010 academic year begins today ending a three month long holiday for both Primary and Secondary students.

This year’s holidays were extended for one month to allow completion of training in English language to both Primary and Secondary school teachers.

The over 40, 000 teachers whose trainings ended on January 29 were equipped with the skills to teach in the English.

Government wants all academic lessons to be conducted in English with effect from this year and has since embarked on training teachers in the language ahead of the start of the new academic year.

The new academic year will also see the second batch of the Nine-Year Basic Education enrolment where over 170, 000 students are expected to join lower secondary in the programme which allows every Rwandan child to study the first nine years for free.

Meanwhile, Secretaries and Bursars in all public primary and econdary schools from the 30 districts of the country completed training on good governance.

Speaking at the concluding ceremony, the director of the Inspectorate of Schools, Narcise Musabyeyezu, urged the officials to contribute to the development of their respective schools.

"Your work shouldn’t be to only archive papers and receive money….you should also become think tanks of your schools and engage in programmes that develop your schools,” said Musabyeyezu.

He also lashed at those who did not attend the trainings saying that they would have to explain their absence when the government spent money on organising the event.
