HUYE - Travelers and taxi drivers in Butare town have voiced their discontent over the districts’ failure to construct a proper taxi park in the town.

Among problems highlighted by passengers and transport operators include and the uncontrolled scramble for passengers by taxi touts.

"We have witnessed total chaos and very poor services due to the current nature of operations at the park.

Passengers are known to have lost their belongings due to the unruly touts operating in the park,” one passenger said.
Taxi drivers blame district authorities for failing to construct a proper taxi park in the town.

"There is a lot of confusion here, there is a mix-up of taxis, motorcycles and bicycles all in one place, the district should solve this mess,” said one driver who plies the Cyangugu- Huye route.

According to Alberic Karemera, the taxi park manager, it is difficult to manage the park since due to its location.

"We have raised this issue with district authorities but nothing has been done, all they are interested in is collecting taxes,” said Karemera.

Jean Marie Vianney Munyanziza, the district officer in charge of infrastructure said that a private company known  as Electromax  has been approached to construct a modern taxi park.

"We have had problems with locating the site for the new taxi park, one that had been previously selected was rejected by the Rwanda Environment Management Authority, we are consulting to find a suitable place,” said Munyanziza.
