KIGALI - Kigali City Mayor, Aisa Kirabo Kacyira has rapped Rwandans for their lack of commitment in the fight against drug abuse, especially among the youth. 

Kirabo was speaking yesterday shortly after the monthly communal work, Umuganda, in Rwombogo cell, Nyarugunga Sector in Kicukiro District.

"Drug abuse is on the increase instead of decreasing, especially among the youth. This is because Rwandans are not reporting those involved in this dangerous practice,” Kirabo said.

"These people dealing in drugs are known by you since they live with you. It’s only you that can bring this to an end if you decided to report them. They eat and live with you.”

The Mayor called on everyone to make the fight against drug abuse their responsibility.

Drug abuse has for the last two consecutive years topped the crime list in the country, especially in Kigali City.
The drugs include marijuana, illicit liquor and sniffing of petroleum products.

In the month of December only, about 20 drug cases out 175 crimes were registered.

"Let’s be responsible by saving our children, the most affected group,” Kirabo said.

Meanwhile it was revealed at the same Umuganda which was also attended by the Minister of Gender and Family Promotion, Jeanne d’Arc Mujawamariya that national IDs are still heaped at different sectors in Kicukiro District.

In Nyarugunga sector only, close to 600 are said to have not been issued out. About 60,000 are also said to be piled in sectors across the country.

The Umuganda that brought together hundreds of residents and parliamentarians was also attended by Joe Weiss, the Director of Infrastructure and Transportation in the City of London.

Weiss has been in the city for the last two weeks to advise Kigali City in implementing its Master Plan.
