Emmanuel Ruterana was handed a crude debut in Uganda’s Kinyara Open golf tournament over the weekend as he finished fourth in the professional category of the two-day event that also attracted amateur golfers.
Making his debut appearance on the rough and unpredictable course, Ruterana carded 84 before overturning that performance with 74 on day two.
The BCR-sponsored golfer fired birdies on holes one and ten to jointly top day-two’s scoreboard together with Uganda’s Deo Akope.
The day-two score (74) moved him to fourth place, three slots lower than his first day position (7th).
"The course was very rough, unpredictable and very challenging partly because I did not have an opportunity to practice. As soon as I arrived, I went straight into the tournament,” Ruterana told Times Sports on his arrival on Tuesday.
"It was also my first time playing on the course so the Ugandans had an upper hand over me. But It was a good challenge for me and it still spells out that a professional is supposed to comfortably compete on any course,” Ruterana continued.
Ruterana bagged $400 from the event while Kamya, Akope and Mande settled for $700, $600 and $500 respectively.
Since his return (Tuesday), Ruterana has resumed daily practice sessions ahead of what he believes will be a busy 2008 season.
