A French-based horse gaming company, Paris Mutuel Urbain (PMU) ,on Thursday re-launched its activities in the country, years after they stopped their operations in Rwanda.

The company that operates in over 50 countries around the world has its roots in Franc) but its operation in Rwanda will be independent as it is fully owned by Rwandans.

Explaining the procedures of playing the game, Eric Ndahayo, the Director General of PMU Rwanda, said that a player has to buy a ticket, choose the horse and jockey (horse rider) that will take the first three positions in their respective order.

"We follow live the race from Europe via satellite, record the results, and replay them over Rwanda TV as the players’ bet over the winning horses.

Speaking to The New Times, PMU-Rwanda head of operations, Jean Pierre Kimenyi said that the company has partnerships abroad but remains independently controlled by 12 shareholders, all Rwandans.

"PMU Rwanda is not a branch of any company.  We only partner in areas of database that helps in providing us with the information needed, nothing more,” explained Kimenyi.

A single tickets costs Frw250 and the reward for the winner depends on the number of players involved in the game.
