APR Basketball Club famously referred to as the Indomitable lions have set December 10 as their departure date ahead of the 22nd edition of the FIBA Africa Club Championships that unfolds next Thursday in the Angolan capital, Luanda.
The local basketball giants who are having their practice sessions at Amahoro indoor courts will leave three days before the official start and APR’s coach Cliff Owuor believes that this will give the players ample time to get acclimatized to the new environment.
"We intend to leave early because that will give us some time to get used to the strange environment.
We also need time to get used to the courts. We shall be playing on world class courts so we need time to get used to them,” the Kenyan added.
APR made their way to FIBA-Africa’s most coveted club competition after edging Kenya Commercial Bank in the finals of the 2007 Zone v club championship that was staged in Kigali, Rwanda.
Much as it will be APR’s maiden appearance, Owuor points out that it will not be the case for some faces in the team.
"Of course some of my players like Aboubacar Barame and Bunene Kajeguhakwa won’t be new faces in Angola after featuring for the Rwandan side at the Afro-basket championships that was staged in Angola back in August,” Owuor added.
Similar to past editions, the ten-day show piece will merge Africa’s top basketball clubs.
Some clubs in this category include the championships’ defending champions Petro Athletico (Angola) and Nigeria’s Potters and Abidjan Basketball Clubs.
