KAMONYI — The first lady Jeannette Kagame, on Tuesday donated Fr 1.8 million to various orphans and Genocide survivors in Kamonyi district towards safer livelihood.

The money would be allocated to projects run by Genocide survivors in Gihara, Gacurabwenge sector.

She was accompanied by Minister Valerie Nyirahabineza, Governor Fidel Ndyisaba, and women leaders from the Unity Club.

On behalf of the Unity club, she also donated other assortment of goods including 60 iron-sheets, 1450kg of rice, 1250kg of beans, 94 blankets, mattresses and cooking oil as part of the festive season’s gifts. 

Madam Kagame also toured the newly established Victory Church orphanage and was welcomed amidst songs and praise by 30 little children living in the orphanage.

The orphanage is fully furbished and intended to accommodate 60 orphans soon.  

Addressing residents, she encouraged them to take care of orphans and bring new hope to the children of Rwanda.

"It is the responsibility of every adult to take care of children, counseling and advising especially on sexuality.

There is a long way but we need to avoid increasing numbers of orphans by practicing family planning,” Kagame said.

She also urged parents and leaders to protect children from sexual abuse, HIV/Aids and advocate for children rights in their respective communities.

The beneficiaries promised to make good use of the donations by helping other survivors with education needs and promised they would be disciplined and good citizens.

Members of the Unity club said that the visit to vulnerable children was prompted by the need to promote sustainability and the desire derived from supporting vulnerable group in the first Lady’s initiative.
