KARONGI – Elections of local leaders, their advisory committees and the National Civic Education (Itorero ry’igihugu) conducted last year in the Western Province have left the province with a debt of Rwf140m.

This was revealed by Provincial Governor Celestin Kabahizi during a joint action meeting held yesterday at the provincial headquarters.

The meeting was attended by Mayors of all the seven districts which comprise the western province.

During the meeting it emerged that poor road networks and what was said to be some misunderstandings between district leaders and their advisory committees especially in Karongi and Nyabihu districts were among the major setbacks that hinder development in the region.

"I believe that these misunderstanding which retard development in our region can be harmoniously dealt with,” Kabahizi said.

The tough speaking Governor also reminded local leaders that more efforts were needed to boost the supply of electricity in the region.

"The region should be able to get maximum benefits since it is home to some of the national power projects like those in Lake Kivu,” he said.
