MUSANZE – Police in Musanze district are searching for a man who allegedly attacked Gacaca court judges who were trying his case in which he is accused of destroying property during the 1994 Genocide.

The incident happened in Mpenge cell in Musanze town.
Police identified the suspect as Iddi Abdal Aziz Baziruwiha, the National Youth Coordinator in the district.

It is alleged that Baziruwiha reacted after the judges found him, his father and two sisters guilty of looting and destroying a house which belonged to Ansila Mukambuguzye.

According to eye witnesses, Baziruwiha grabbed one of the seating judges by the neck, while his sister cheered him up, before residents intervened to stop the fight.

The president of the traditional judges in Musanze, Shakira Niyotegeka, confirmed the incident, explaining that court had ordered each of the convicts to pay a fine of Rwf800,000 that will contribute to Rwf5m , the value of  the destroyed property.

According to sources, Baziruwiha, who is also a commissioner in the National Unity and Reconciliation Commission, disappeared immediately after the incident.

Gacaca convened yesterday and sentenced Baziruwiha to one year in jail for fighting the judges, while his sister was sentenced to 6 months for similar misconduct.
