NYAGATARE – The dismissal of over 700 students from Umutara Polytechnic University who were not eligible for Government sponsorship has caused financial loss to the university, The New Times has learnt.

An inside source at the university who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that they incurred losses in registering students and paying for hostels for the students who have now been dismissed.

‘The university had requested the Ministry of Education to admit 1,408 students but surprisingly, only 663 students were eventually admitted.

The campus has made losses due to expenditures incurred in preparation to host the students who have now been sent home,’ the source said.

By Friday evening, the last batch of students were boarding buses back to their homes after negotiations with the university to allow them stay failed.

Speaking in a telephone interview, the University vice Rector in charge of academics, Dr. Eugene Ndabaga confirmed the loss.

‘It is true that we have incurred some losses. Consequently, we have terminated contracts with private investors, who had been contracted to accommodate these students,’ he said.

The specific amount could not be confirmed as the Rector referred the reporter to the Institutions Finance manager who could not be reached.
