One of Rwanda’s leading music producers, Lick Lick (real name Isaac Munyembabazi), was early last week fired by his former boss Albert Niyonzima, the owner of Unlimited Records.

Niyonzima accused Lick Lick for embezzling funds, insubordination and neglecting upcoming artists.

"He used to disregard upcoming artists, and instead considered the already established ones,” Niyonzima said during an interview with Salus FM, a Butare based radio station.

"Many of these artists, some coming from upcountry, would come to the studio everyday, requesting him to work on their songs,” Niyonzima said. "He would avoid them, telling them to comeback the following day, until some of them decided to spend nights at the studio to express their agony.”

Talking to The New Times, Lick Lick refuted the allegations, saying that he instead had misunderstandings with Niyonzima, and decided to quit.

"Some of these upcoming artists think that once the song is in studio it’s guaranteed to come out the following day,” Lick Lick said. "Most of the songs are poorly done, and we literally have to rework on them. It needs time and patience, which most of these artists don’t understand.”

Lick is now working with One Way Production, though he insists that is he planning to start his own studio.
