KIGALI - In a move seen as being more accountable to the public, Kigali City Council presented to its residents its performance results during last year.

The function which was chaired by Kigali City Mayor, Aisha Kirabo Kacyira and Local Government Minister James Musoni, was held at Kigali Independent University (ULK) on Saturday.

The meeting attracted several leaders as well as hundreds of City residents to hold dialogue and plan the way forward for 2010.

The Mayor, Kirabo said that in 2009, the City achieved tremendous progress in the areas of security, economy, environment protection and infrastructural development.
"We reconstructed 36km of roads in 2009. In this year, we shall solicit for funds to construct more,” she said.

She said that the City had used Rwf 922 million to install security lights on 50 percent of the tarmac roads.

"During this year, we shall put more lights to cover 15kms of tarmac which will cost us Rwf800 million,” Kirabo said.
She also added that last year, the City Council was able to launch the Nyarugenge district Masterplan and that in 2010, focus will be directed towards unveiling master plans of the other two districts of Gasabo and Kicukiro.

She urged local leaders in attendance to be exemplary in as far as easing doing business and investment is concerned.

"This year as we prepare for the forthcoming presidential elections, I urge the local leaders and the population at large to play your roles positively such that Kigali City Council continues to lead in the organization as it was seen during the last parliamentary elections,” Kirabo said.

Local Government Minister James Musoni said that he was alarmed at the number of leaders who resigned or were imprisoned over corruption charges saying that leaders need to act more professional in 2010.

"Leadership is supposed to be a selfless act, which is not meant to satisfy the needs of the leader but instead serve the needs of the society in where the leader oversees,” Musoni advised those present.
