NYAGATARE - A farmer in Rukomo sector, Nyagatare district last week stumbled upon  a human skull suspected to belong to a genocide victim. 

‘While  I was digging in my farm I unearthed what appeared to be  a human skull. I immediately alerted local leaders. We dug deeper but could not find the other parts of the skeleton,’ Vincent Gafarasi said. 

However, area residents who spoke to The New Times said that the area where the skull was discovered was a centre for killings prior to and during the 1994 genocide.

‘For instance there was a man called Kariopi who was a ruthless killer in this area. He could kill people and dump some of them in nearby rivers.  Very many people were killed here,’ Jean Damascene Nkunzwenimana, an area resident said.   

The area, which was during genocide named as ‘Zone Tempo’ was a home to  former government military barracks. 

‘Even these soldiers killed people during genocide. The sector should thoroughly find out whether some remains could be around here,’ another resident said. 

In an interview with The New Times, Rukomo sector Executive Secretary, Emmanuel Hakuzweyezu said that sector authorities are going to gather information from residents to ascertain where genocide remains can be retrieved.
