HUYE - The campaign to fight HIV/AIDS by using Condoms has been stepped up in rural areas through drama.  National Aids Control Commission (CNLS) is using a play dubbed  ‘special trap’ by Mashirika theatre group to disseminate information  surrounding effects of being engaged in  a love triangle.

The play was conducted as part of a  condom promotion campaign held in Huye district last Friday which attracted hundreds of local residents and associations of people living with HIV/AIDS.

Speaking at the event, Antoine Semukanya, the Deputy Executive Secretary of CNLS urged residents not to shy a way from speaking about condoms. or talking to their children about AIDS.

"You should be courageous and speak about sex and condom use with your children,” he said.  "You should use condoms to ensure that you are protected from HIV/AIDS and unwanted pregnancies.”

Residents  also heard a testimony of Immaculate Mukarugwiza who got infected with HIV in 1992 but has lived positively with the virus ever since.

"After knowing my  status, I changed my life style to suit my new condition,” said the mother of five. "My husband and I agreed to start using condoms and not to have more children. He died in 1997 but I have since moved  on and I am now much stronger as I raise our children.”

According to a 2005 health survey, the HIV prevelance rate at 2.3 % and 7.7 % in urban setting. The same study also shows that the use of condom still remains low especially among the female population with 19.7% against 40.9% among male population.
