Policeman arrested for possession of banned alcohol

NYAGATARE – A Police constable in Nyagatare district was arrested and detained after he was caught with illicit alcohol which authorities suspect was retrieved from a dumping site for confiscated illegal brew. Constable Melchior Mutarutwa was part of the team that was assigned to destroy the alcohol which had been confiscated.

NYAGATARE – A Police constable in Nyagatare district was arrested and detained after he was caught with illicit alcohol which authorities suspect was retrieved from a dumping site for confiscated illegal brew.

Constable Melchior Mutarutwa was part of the team that was assigned to destroy the alcohol which had been confiscated. 

Sources allege that Muturutwa returned to the dumping sight late at night to pick up the alcohol.

The Regional Police Commander, Chief Superintendent Gilbert Gumira, confirmed the incident while addressing a security meeting at the Provincial headquarters in Rwamagana on Thursday.

He added that the constable is currently in custody at Kibungo Police Disciplinary Centre pending further investigations and prosecution.

"He will be charged not only for drinking illegal brew, but also for behaving contrary to police force standing orders,” he said.

The Mayor of Nyagatare district, Fred Sabit Atuhe, added that the fight against dealing and drinking of illicit alcohol was showing results due to increased vigilance of security officials and sensitisation of the population.
