RUBAVU – Road constructors currently working on Gisenyi town roads discovered remains of 15 victims of 1994 Genocide against Tutsi have been discovered on the shores of Lake Kivu.

"We were just trying to clean the sewage system, but we suspect there could be a lot more remains here,” Emmanuel Uwiragiye, the construction supervisor said.

The district has allocated the man power to dig down and search for more bodies.

Speaking to The New Times, Innocent Kabanda, the representative of survivors association in Gisenyi sector said that they had no information about the victims who were buried there.

"Last year, remains were also discovered at Lake Kivu Serena Hotel just few meters from here under the same circumstances. The whole area might be full of these remains since this place was heavily guarded by Interahamwe and ex-FAR,” Kabanda said.

Ibuka and Gisenyi sector authorities have appealed to residents to help identify the victims.

"We cannot just bury unidentified bodies,” Médiatrice Mwangange, the coordinator of culture and education in Rubavu district said.
