RWAMAGANA - Kibungo Diocese is facing serious financial troubles that may see some of its assets auctioned to clear off debts, a church official has said.

Father Cyprian Ntaganira, the head of Rwamagana Parish, called upon Christians to contribute money to pay the debts which sources say amount to over Rwf 1 billion.

"We as Christians have to save our institution from collapsing. I look forward to your cooperation,” he said.
Adults have been requested to contribute Rwf 1,000 and children Rwf100 to get the church out of the financial mess. 

The banks gave the diocese a deadline within which to pay the debts, failure to do so, may see the diocese lose some of its assets, the priests say.

However, the appeal for a bailout attracted heavy criticism
Joseph Gakwaya, had no kind words for the priests, arguing that it was unfair for the diocese to ask Christians to bail out the church out after causing heavy financial losses to the diocese.

Another Christian who never wanted his names to be revealed alleged that it has become a habit by their church leaders to swindle money.

"What beats my reasoning is that some of those in charge steal money and none of them is ever held accountable,” he said.
