Rwandan and Belgian military officers yesterday started a three-day bilateral military cooperation talks at the Ministry of Defence headquarters in Kigali.

Army and Defence spokesperson, Maj. Jill Rutaremara, told The New Times that the two armies already have a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and that the Belgian delegation had come to Rwanda to further discuss the two countries’ cooperation arrangement.

"The Joint Military Commission will also review the existing MoU between the two sides and come up with proposals for consideration by higher authorities.” Rutaremara said.

The four-man delegation from Belgium is led by Col. Motmans the Head of Military Cooperation. Present also at the meeting was Lt Col Michaux, the Belgian Defence Attaché in Kigali.

The Rwandan team is headed by Col. Michael Nkurunziza, the Deputy Head of Operations and Training (J3).

In September last year, Belgian Chief of Defence, Gen. Charles-Henri Delcour visited the country and met top government officials, including RDF Defence Minister ,Gen. Marcel Gatsinzi and his Rwandan counterpart, Gen. James Kabarebe.

In their discussions, the two countries’ top military officers agreed to establish a joint Military Technical Commission to foster defence cooperation between the two armies.
