Following the recent discharge of over 2,004 personnel from military service, the army and defence spokesperson Maj. Jill Rutaremara, has noted that recruitment efforts have also been made.

Without divulging specific numbers of new recruits, Maj. Rutaremara told The Sunday Times that the army is a dynamic institution and when soldiers are discharged, others are recruited.

"You must note that the military is a dynamic institution. As we shed some off, such as the old ones, we also recruit,” Maj. Rutaremara said.

"Just last year, we recruited and even put up announcements in various media outlets. And, right now, there is a cadet course at Gako.”

Maj. Rutaremara noted that the ongoing cadet training course, which involves a total 241 soldiers, includes four Liberians, two Ugandans, two Tanzanians and a Burundian.

He said the troops from the East African Community (EAC) region are participating under the framework of the bloc’s current agreement in which military students and instructors are exchanged but the Liberians are here under the Rwanda-Liberia bilateral military cooperation arrangement.

The troops discharged Friday, in the army’s 16th phase of demobilization were released for reasons including lack of physical fitness and old age. Some had requested to be discharged, "mainly for social reasons.”
