Rudy Cantanhede won his third consecutive national rally championship after winning the two-day ‘Des Mille Collines rallye’ that climaxed last Sunday.
Navigated by David Israel in a yellow Subaru Impreza, the Belgian-born driver clocked 04:12:23 to finish 12 minutes ahead of Christakis Fitidis and his co-driver Dominique Niyonzima who came second in their Mitsubishi Evo 6.
It was Cantenhede’s sixth Des Mille Collines title and fifth top spot finish at this year’s national rally championship.
Tony Saegerman who was Cantanhede’s major threat squandered his title hopes when he frustratingly finished off in a distant fifth spot.
Burundi’s Valery Bukera came third while Elefter Mitraros finished fourth in his Subaru Impreza.
Out of 16, only nine drivers finished the race. The clerk of the course Salim Abdulgani said that seven drivers pulled out due to mechanical problems.
Abdulgani added "It was an interesting race with no accidents. It rained a bit but that did not affect the action”.
After Cantanhede being crowned national rally champion, Israel was also crowned as the 2007 co-driver champion in a colorful ceremony that was staged at Mille Collines.
Cantanhede expressed his gratitude after being crowned champions and said that he is looking forward to weighing himself with bigger names in bigger races.
