One of the top indicators of a country’s strong anti-corruption credentials is a police force that is clean and devoid of any conduct that could compromise its core mission of maintaining law and order.

In Africa, it is widely believed that one of the main challenges afflicting Police forces is corruption and by extension, the questions of integrity of those serving within the institution.

The news that government has discharged, from the National Police some 42 officers of whom 22 were dismissed for gross misconduct that includes bribery, is simply a commendable act.

By coming up with stringent measures to seal the loopholes that corrupt officers exploit, Police is not only protecting its image but also exhibiting high professional standards.

The Police force is a central player in the fight against corruption. But it cannot succeed in this battle if any of its members are themselves involved in the practice.

Graft of any form should never be tolerated in the police as it compromises the integrity of the force and renders it incapable of fulfilling its mission.

Therefore, the act of weeding out wrong elements like we have seen, serves to build more public confidence in the force, and indeed it gives law enforcement the moral high ground which is necessary for the partnership with the public they serve and protect.
